Resorts Near the Harangi Backwaters, Coorg

The Harangi backwaters are the stretch of calm water that forms behind Harangi Dam, near Herur in Kushalnagar. It’s a quieter, less-commercialised alternative to Coorg’s more famous viewpoints — mostly visited by people staying nearby rather than as a standalone day-trip destination, which is part of why search volume for “harangi backwaters” (9,900/month) is high relative to how little written information about it actually exists online.

Harangi Dam and Backwaters

What’s there

The backwaters sit behind Harangi Dam, surrounded by coffee estates and forest. The main things to do are on and around the water itself — boating, fishing, and birdwatching in the early morning and evening, when the light is best and the water is at its calmest. There’s a Forest Department elephant camp in the vicinity as well, distinct from the better-known Dubare camp further along the Cauvery.

Water levels shift with the season: fullest just after the monsoon (October–November), noticeably lower by the end of the dry season (March–May). If boating or a full-looking backwater view is the point of the visit, October through January is the more reliable window.

Getting there

The backwaters are close to Herur, a short distance from Kushalnagar town. From Kushalnagar itself, it’s a short drive. From Madikeri, figure roughly 30–35 km, in line with the general Madikeri–Kushalnagar distance. From Bengaluru, it’s part of the same roughly 250 km, five-to-six-hour drive as the rest of the Kushalnagar area via NH-275.

Who this suits

The backwaters suit travellers who want a quieter alternative to Coorg’s more crowded viewpoints — couples looking for a calm setting, families interested in an easy boating or birdwatching outing, and anyone staying in Kushalnagar who wants a half-day activity that doesn’t involve driving back into Madikeri.

It’s a less structured experience than a formal boating facility elsewhere in Karnataka — there’s no large jetty or ticketed operation, so it suits an unhurried visit more than a scheduled activity.
